Horse Tram UPDATE!
1 minute read
Last time we checked, the Horse Tram Trail was in dire need of some TLC. The route, an old mining cut north of Juneau connecting Amalga Harbor and Boy Scout Beach, was a soupy mess of mud, marsh, and stinging devil’s club.
Since then, Trail Mix has put in the work. They’ve completed a fresh 1.36 mile section of gravel, connecting the two systems.
We stopped by to check it out and can report this is our new favorite trail around Juneau! We started at the Amalga end and followed the path along the shoreline, across a few meadows, through the forest, and back to the ocean. The newly graveled track is level, spongy, and wonderful. You can do the route as a short out-and-back, or make the trail the starting point for a longer hike, run, or bike connecting to the developed trails at Boy Scout Beach.
Big shoutout to Trail Mix for maintaining and expanding the opportunities to get outside in Southeast Alaska. Consider donating or becoming a member to help keep Juneau awesome.
Stay safe out there!
The Details
From downtown Juneau, take Glacier Highway 24 miles (39 km) north, then turn left into Amalga Harbor. Take the first right down a dirt road and park at the Eagle Valley Center. Follow the path across a wooden bridge, then turn right. The Horse Tram trail is level and approximately 2.3 miles (3.5 km). This is an easy and rewarding hike, run, or mountain bike with numerous connections to expand on. You can leave a car at the Boy Scout Beach trailhead, or do an out-and-back.
